What IB Means for Litchfield...

message from a parent . . .

The IB Middle Years Program/MYP will begin at Litchfield Middle School in the fall of 2014.
Litchfield has been approved as a Candidate and now begins to 'Follow the Program'.
There is going to be quite a bit of work involved preparing for the fall.
The end of the school year is always a busy time and with the IB Program NEWS it will become even busier for the staff.
For those who want more information I hope the following will help 'for now'.

'My' rather 'simplistic' way to 'begin' to explain what IB will mean to our students and school?
Think of the child who mentions something they learned at school to an adult at home. On a perfect no-stress day (with birds chirping) the parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, neighbor continues the conversation... Maybe not in the precise direction the 'general textbook' would head but in a way that 'brings it home' to the child, you know, 'lightbulb!'.

WELL, that is part of what IB is.
Lessons taught and then 'more' and then 'more LIGHT'!

The 'more' is the STUFF that one may expect from advanced level or honors classes but in an IB program 'every student' gets 'more' and that gives ALL a  'CHANCE TO SHINE'.
There is so much more to learn about the program but I think the above is a start for those who are expecting to be overwhelmed...

*parents*
We should be ecstatic.
*students*
'more'  FUN . . . 'more' sharing YOUR thoughts and opinions . . . 'more' interesting for ALL
*teachers*
Our staff will be going through quite a bit of training. They will have work added to their already countless hours. They will need 'more support' from our community than ever before ALTHOUGH -we hope the 'bright lights' that they see pop on in front of them as the new year begins will help them along their way.

This video below includes students who have continued on to the high school IB program, you may be able to tell that some are older than 13, 14.  Firestone High School has not only an excellent IB program but many options to suit every student whether they plan to enter the workforce upon graduation or attend university or a mix of both. I hate to even discuss Firestone's IB Program 'only' as it ignores the other programs and the 'Nationally Ranked' school as a whole but this post is about the IB Program so please be aware you will be given COMPLETE FIRESTONE INFO before long and can inquire on your own by visiting their website. (link at end of this blog post)
*note* EVERY LMS student will take a foreign language, an art class as well as a technology course in the IB MYP.

The MYP beginning at Litchfield is simply a wonderful opportunity for all sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students regardless of their future high school plans.
Definitely something to look forward to...

ThankYouSoVeryMuch . . . Susan Weiss, Litchfield Parent

the following taken from ibo.org
The MYP is designed for students aged 11 to 16. It provides a framework of learning which encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and to the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement, qualities that are essential for life in the 21st century.
